Downey does serious damage with silver medal at Euro Champs

Mark Downey has done it again with another medal for Ireland at a major championships.


Having already won a medal at a major championships as a junior, Mark Downey has done it again.

The young Banbridge man, who has based himself with the VC Toucy road team in France this year, has taken silver in the U23 points race at the European Track Championships in Italy.

It is the same event he took silver in two years ago as a junior at the Euros in Portugal.

Downey’s medal this time out was again one of real quality, with the world champion winning and the defending European champion just behind Downey in the bronze medal position.

Now a second-year U23 rider, Downey has seen his progress continue unabated this year.

He was selected onto the Irish National Team for the An Post Rás and rode a fantastic great, showing great strength and race smarts to finishing 13th overall.

He then went on to win his first race in France with his Rás form.

And two weeks ago he took 7th in the TT at the National Road Championships in Co Kildare, following that up with 6th in the combined elite and U23 road race three days later.

That road race ride brought him the silver medal in the U23 contest within the event.

And now he continues is rapid progress this season with a silver medal this evening.

His medal-winning ride comes just 24 hours after first-year junior Xeon Young took 4th in the junior individual pursuit.
