Paul Antoine Hagan has taken victory in the West Down Wheelers GP in impressively style today in Castlewellan.

The Banbridge CC man had it all to do in the final couple of laps when two groups of two riders got clear of the bunch.

However, he set off on his own and caught the first two ahead of him, before they caught the leaders.

That coming together created a five-man breakaway comprised of: Hagan, Kevin Lynch (Newry Wheelers), Cathir Doyle (Powerhouse Sport), Nathan Keown (North Down CC) and Cathal Clarke (Armagh-Down).

On the last passage of the Rathfriland climb, the five was whittle down to four when Lynch lost contact.

And on the approach to the finish the gap back to the bunch, which had been about 45 seconds, came down to only 10 to 15 seconds.

Hagan took it up early in the gallop to the line; getting out front and holding off Clarke and Doyle for a great win.

More to come.
