Video: Sam Bennett slips out of Turkey race lead popping wheelies

Sam Bennett may have been popping wheelies as he slipped out of the race leader’s jersey but his team mate was in winning mode up ahead. Bora-hansgrohe’s Felix Großschartner won the stage in the snow and now leads overall.

Sam Bennett had time to pop wheelies on the climb to the summit finish today despite losing his Tour of Turkey race lead.

The planned 164km stage from Bursa to Kartepe was to finish atop a 16km climb. However, heavy snowfall meant 4km was shaved off the ascent.

That still left a testing 12km climb in very cold conditions. And after the sprinters had owned the race in the first four stages, the climbers came out to play today.

Double stage winner Bennett’s team mate Felix Großschartner proved strongest; claiming the stage solo after the field split to pieces on the final climb.

And on a perfect day for the team, the stage winner also took the race lead and looks set to win the tour outright when it finishes in Istanbul tomorrow.

Bennett will be hoping to win again in Istanbul and, if so, he would take his tally of victories on the race this year to three.

Today he finished in 86th place, some 16:09 down. He was in the company of yesterday’s bunch sprint winner Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal).

Today’s ride saw Sam Bennett slip down the standings by 59 placings to 60th overall.

As the TV helicopter cameras picked him out on the last section of climbing before the finish line, it looked like Bennett’s Bora-hansgrohe team car told him via his race radio that he was on TV.

And so he popped a few wheelies for the camera; as he is known to do on some of the mountain stages on major races.
