Sam Bennett Paris-Nice

Sam Bennett has taken a superb win on stage 3 of Paris-Nice; all the fastest men were present but Sam Bennett was just too strong for them.

Ireland’s Sam Bennett has taken victory on the end of stage 3 at Paris-Nice today; proving far too strong for the other sprinters.

He rode a perfect finale, simply biding his time and smashing the sprint by a considerable margin.

It was his second career stage win at Paris-Nice and his third victory of this year.

Mike Teunissen of Jumbo-Visma led out the sprint, hoping to set up the race leader and double stage winner Dylan Groenewegen.

However, Sam Bennett simply bossed the action for Bora-hansgrohe all the and in the end nobody got close to him.

The Irish rider jumped onto Teunissen’s wheel and though Groenewegen pulled up alongside the Irishman, Bennett never looked under pressure.

He came around Teunissen and unleashed his sprint with the outcome never in doubt once Sam Bennett hit the after burners.

It looked for a time as though the yellow jersey would push him closest, but the Dutchman faded as Bennett’s staying power to keep the sprint going looked so impressive.

And coming over the line Bennett took victory from Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal) and Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck-QuickStep).

The 200km stage from Cepoy to Moulins-Yzeure was not as chaotic as the racing had been on the opening stage and yesterday.

While the crosswinds played their part they had nowhere near the same impact on the racing today, which gave way to a much more traditional sprinters’ finale that was dominated by Bennett.

He took a stage on this race two years ago, his first WorldTour win at the time. However, since then he has claimed 19 more victories with 12 of those now in WorldTour races.

Sam Bennett’s victory today continues what has been a fantastic start to the season. He has won stages in every race he has ridden and appears to be in rare form.

He opened his account at Vuelta a San Juan in Argentina before following that up at UAE Tour; winning the final stages of both events.

And now he has blasted home in very impressive style to take his second victory on ‘the race to the sun’.
