Video Sam Bennett win Rund um Köln

Sam Bennett didn’t just win this sprint finish, he owned it. Marcel Kittel challenged but when Bennett kicked it was instantly all over. That’s the Irish rider’s fifth win of the year today.

Having ridden so well in the Giro d’Italia right to the final stage, which he won, Sam Bennett is back at it.

He not only took victory in Rund um Köln, he demolised the final kick to the line.

Marcel Kittel was the other fancied sprinter into the pack in the 207km 1.1-ranked race into Cologne.

And when an early breakaway went clear it fell to Bennett’s Bora-hansgrohe team, along with Kittel’s Katusha-Alpecin, to bring the move back.

The race did indeed regroup and Bennett’s team gave him a great lead-out.

As the Irish rider moved out and hit the front in the sprint, Kittel did the same.

But the big German would fade, placing 5th, as Sam Bennett made it look very easy indeed, as the video below shows.

The Carrick-on-Suir man won from Mihkel Raim (Israel Cycling Academy) and Szymon Sajnok (CCC Sprandi Polkowice).

The confidence Sam Bennett is now showing is being matched by his power and timing; not to mention a great team effort.
