Sam Bennett crash in Tour de Slovenia

Sam Bennett starts Tour de Slovenia stage 2 in the race leader’s jersey, but a crash would change that.

Sam Bennett started the stage in dry and sunny conditions and in the race leader’s jersey at the Tour de Slovenia.

But 170km later he was sliding across wet Ljubljana tarmac on his back and rear end, his GC lead also gone.

He headed the standings this morning after winning yesterday’s opening stage in some style.

But today Bennett’s Bora-hansgrohe team lost some of Bennett’s lead-out riders to a crash just before the 1km red kite.

The Irishman would fall at the next left hand bend just as he was in a great position to go for his second stage win in as many days.

The heavens had opened in the final hour and the roads were very slippy; Bennett and his team among the very many fallers.

The good news is that he seems uninjured, save for road rash. And while tomorrow’s stage is a summit finish, he will have another flat one on Sunday to try for victory again.

Riding his home tour, Luka Mezgec (Orica-Scott) takes the stage and race lead after emerging from the chaos of the final.

The clips below contain the crashes that took out Bennett and his team mates. The final clip of the three is the final 10km as-live.

However, we’ve set it for you to begin your viewing with about 2km remaining.

Bennett’s sports director Christian Pömer said the team was disappointed after the high of winning yesterday.

“Today we had a lot of bad luck. Erik crashed already in the beginning of the stage,” he said.

“But still (we) controlled the race with Matteo and Alex until halfway through. In the end the break was caught on the last 10k and it started to rain.

“Our team worked very well and we put ourselves in a promising position. But then the crash happened and Lukas, Gregor and Sam went down and we lost all chances.

“The riders are ok at least. Now we already look ahead again. Tomorrow is a different day and for Rafa it will be the day for the GC here in Slovenia.”
