Ireland’s Sam Bennett takes his second win in three days, making it look all too easy

Sam Bennett wins again at Czech Cycling Tour

Sam Bennett has sprinted in for his second victory in three days at the Czech Cycling Tour.

The Irishman was far too fast for the opposition at the end of 157km from Olomouc to Dolany.

Bennett’s Bora-hansgrohe team brought back a breakaway group today, just as it had done to set up his victory on Friday’s stage 2,

After the 11-rider escape was recaptured on this afternoon’s final stage, the team controlled the peloton.

Sam Bennett benefitted from a strong lead-out at the finish. And he made it look easy as he gathered the seventh win of his 2017 campaign.

He also sealed victory in the points classification, topping a very successful few days for the Carrick-on-Suir sprinter.

Bora-hansgrohe had finished 2nd in the team TT that got the race underway on Thursday. And when Bennett on Friday won the opening road stage, he took the yellow jersey.

However, yesterday’s stage 3 was not as kind to him. And when he came under attack on the undulating finishing circuit the parcours did not prove one for the fastmen.

Bennett trailed home towards the back of the bunch. That meant he was out of the fight for the yellow jersey.

He rode the final part of yesterday’s stage to conserve energy for another tilt at winning today. And that strategy proved a wise one.

His team mate Jan Barta was 2nd on yesterday’s stage. That moved Barta up to 2nd overall behind Josef Cerny (Elkov-Author CT).

Barta was just 7 seconds off the yellow jersey this morning. And while Bora-hansgrohe wanted to ride for Sam Bennett today, they also tried to help Barta take the yellow jersey.

However, those efforts came to nothing and Cerny ran out the overall winner.

“We tried to get some seconds in the intermediate sprints with Jan, but that didn’t work out,” said sports director Jan Valach.

“Juraj was in the break then, and we have been in control of the race. Then he was caught on the last lap in Dolany.

“Erik and Pascal prepared the sprint for Sam, who took his second stage win. In the GC Jan and Silvio remained their second and fourth place.

“We also won the team classification. I am really happy with the results in this race.”
