Sam Bennett loses Tour of Turkey race lead
Sam Bennett is still leading the Tour of Turkey overall and also holds the points jersey. Four stages are now complete with two remaining.

Sam Bennett has taken 3rd place on today’s fourth stage of the Tour of Turkey; Caleb Ewan proving best on a challenging uphill finish.

The Australian came around Bennett just before the line and also went past Juan Jose Lobato (Nippo Vini Fantini) to win.

While Sam Bennett looked like he was in a great position to take another victory, he lacked the kick we saw on the opening two stages, which he won.

And when he proved unable to close the gap to Lobato, who had started his sprint early, Ewan (Lotto-Soudal) came around Bennett; going past him and Lobato to win.

Just behind him a frustrated Lobato had to be content with 2nd place, with Sam Bennett (Bora-hansgrohe) in 3rd.

The result meant he retained the race lead which he took on the opening day after winning the stage.

Bennett followed up 24 hours later by winning again and was 2nd yesterday before his 3rd place finish today.

Those results mean he still holds both the race lead and the points classification. With a summit finish tomorrow some of the climbers in the race are expected to battle for the leader’s jersey.

However, the fast men are likely to have one more chance, into Istanbul, when the race concludes on Sunday; a stage Bennett won solo last year with a late attack.

Today on the 194.3km stage from Balikesir to Bursa a five-man group broke clearly early and their lead quickly shot out to over eight minutes.

However, the last of them was caught with 11km remaining; setting up a sprint finish on the incline to the line.
