Video: Brilliant Bennett extends Turkey lead with another win

Posted on: October 11th, 2018

Sam Bennett extends his  Tour of Turkey race lead and points classification lead with a second stage win in as many days.

Sam Bennett survived the late climb on stage 3 of the Tour of Turkey to take his second win in two days.

The Irishman missed out on the opening day’s action and had to settle for 2nd place. But he won yesterday and repeated that result today.

It means he’s got two wins from three, leads the race overall and also leads the points classification. Indeed, his victory today saw the Bora-hansgrohe man extend his overall lead.

He now has 10 seconds in hand over second-placed Maximiliano Richeze (QuickStep), four more than he did this morning.

Bennett had said yesterday the stages were relatively easy, for pro racing, meaning many riders were in contention in the sprints.

However, because of the late climb today the group sprinting for victory was smaller. There were just 80 men in the peloton as it hurtled in towards the stage end in Marmaris after 137km.

The early breakaway drove clear and gained three minutes at one point. However, they were caught just before the final 2.5km climb began.

And on that ascent Nicolas Roche (BMC) was one of the aggressors though the field regrouped.

When Bennett’s sprint rival Alvaro Hodeg (QuickStep) was dropped on the climb and the Irishman survived, the outcome looked like a formality.

And while stage 1 winner Richeze put in a huge effort to try and beat Sam Bennett, the Carrick-on-Suir man proved too fast. John Degenkolb (Trek-Segafredo) was 3rd.

After his efforts on the final main road climb today, Nicolas Roche finished in the bunch in 49th place. And with an uphill finish tomorrow Roche will be hoping to impress.
