Video: Watch Sam Bennett’s superb final kilometre for Paris-Nice win

Posted on: March 15th, 2019

Sam Bennett was forced to battle all the way to win stage 6 at Paris-Nice, even being badly bumped just before the sprint proper began.

This footage, below, of the final kilometre of today’s stage 6 at Paris-Nice really shows the quality of Sam Bennett’s second win of the race.

He had to fight hard for this and when he suffered a setback just before the line he was able to recover before pouncing hard to win after 176.5km from Peynier to Brignoles

When this clip begins Sam Bennett is fifth in line, with Arnaud Demare being led out by two of his Groupama FDJ team mates.

Bennett has a tussle with a Bahrain-Merida rider who is trying to position Sonny Colbrelli at on the back wheel of Demare.

Bennett easily comes off best in the fight for that wheel, with the elbows out if you look closely.

The Irish rider then gets into the wheel of one of the Bahrain-Merida riders as he moves up towards the front.

However, while it looks like things are going perfectly for Sam Bennett, he then gets bumped by the road side and has to stop pedalling for a moment.

That causes him to lose momentum and John Degenkolb (Trek-Segafredo) comes past him at a much faster pace than the Irishman is forced to slow to.

However, Bennett doesn’t lose his head and when Demare opens his sprint Ireland’s Bora-hansgrohe rider somehow finds a path through the men just ahead of him.

He darts passed them quickly and hunts down Demare; closing the gap the French rider has opened and then powering passed him.

Everything is on show her from Sam Bennett; resilience, composure, expert bike handling and world-beating speed.
