A 60km per hour effort for 2km has taken Irish rider Robert Jon McCarthy to the best result he’s achieved since he came back to racing last year.

Robert Jon McCarthy blasts around Croatia prologue TT

Robert Jon McCarthy has taken his best result since coming back to racing last year. The Irishman, who rides with JLT Condor, was 2nd in the prologue TT at the Istrian Spring Trophy (2.2) in Croatia.

In the very fast 2km TT in Umag, McCarthy scorched down the course in 2:05.

Officially he was on equal time with stage winner Nils Eekhoff (Development Team Sunweb).

But last year’s U23 Paris-Roubaix winner was judged to have gone slightly faster when they broke it down to tenths of a second.

McCarthy also carried the points jersey into the opening road stage.

Today’s stage 1 took the riders 161km from Porec to Labin. And with the final 5km all uphill, it did not suit sprinter McCarthy.

But his TT ride suggests he has very good condition early in the season.

“It was very hard; I went full gas off the line,” he said. “I messed one of the corners up and then died a death in the last 200-300 metres.

“The average power was 522 watts and normalised was about 533; decent numbers that I was looking to do.

“I was happy considering there was a dead corner on the course; really happy to pull off a result.”

“Today was a 5km uphill finish. So it was a bit long for me in the end. But my form is decent. I did a very good winter. I lost a bit in January after being ill for a couple of weeks.”

The racing in Croatia continues until Sunday. Next up for Robert Jon McCarthy is the Tour of Normandie.
