On the far right of shot, Danny McDonald of Burren Cycling Club gets up on home roads in a large international bunch. He took 4th in the bunch sprint just seven seconds behind the two leaders and so took 6th on the stage. He was best Irish rider today; a very good result (Photo: Toby Watson)

Danny McDonald, riding for Burren CC, was best Irish rider on the opening stage of the Junior Tour of Ireland.

On the stage into Barefield today two riders took 1st and 2nd from a two-man breakaway; Americans Eli Husted (Hot Tubes) and Seth Callahan (Lux Sideshow).

They finished 7 seconds ahead of the peloton after a long-range breakaway that just about survived all the way.

The jerseys after stage 1: Husted in yellow, Callahan in green and Nick Carter in the young rider white jersey. There’s plenty of racing to come, will these jerseys changed hands?

The first three riders in the bunch sprint were also Americans, and then came local teenager McDonald, just one place ahead of Finley Newmark (Team Ireland).
