The gaps at the end of the opening stage at Kerry Group Rás Mumhan were nothing short of huge; most of the riders losing six minutes or more.

Though the stage, which started and finished in Killorglin, was just 96km it was savage.

Alex Luhrs and Daniel Bigham of Ribble Pro took 1-2 on the stage after 2hrs 8mins of racing.

They pulled out three seconds on Ben Healy of the Irish National Team; those three the survivors of the eight-man breakaway that went clearly in the first third of the race.

The leading three on the day gained just over 1½ minutes on a large chase group of 19 riders. And after that chase group a handful of riders finished in ones and twos.

However, Matthew Overste of West Frisia led home the peloton; placing 26th on the stage and losing 5:58.

Mark Dowling of Leinster, a former winner of the race overall, clipped off the front of the chase group; taking 4th on the stage.

Dowling also gained two seconds on those he was with; a small gap but one that may prove decisive as the weekend progresses.
