Ras Dhun na nGall Stage 2: French-based Junior, Hambrook takes command

Posted on: June 2nd, 2012

New Zealand junior rider Sean Hambrook has taken the second stage of the Ras Dhun na nGall and now holds the yellow jersey, mountains jersey and heads the junior classification at the mid way point of the race.

Hambrook races with the VCC Morteau team in Eastern France and has traveled to Donegal this weekend with Dubliner Darragh Zaidan, who is also riding with the French outfit this year.

The junior rider took the KOH prime in Friday evening’s opening stage, giving him the lead in that classification. Having finished in the peloton on the opening stage, his win the time trial this morning, Saturday, moved him into the yellow jersey going into this afternoon’s 51-mile road stage.

He won the 1.8mile TT in a time of 7:00.76, and was 2.87 seconds ahead of second placed Mike Ryder (Galway Bay), with stage favourite Ian Richardson (UCD CC) in third, 5.44 seconds down.

Cormac Clarke of Cycling Ulster, who was second on the opening stage, finished fourth in the TT and is also fourth overall.

However, the gaps are very small on GC, with 58 riders still within one minute the overall lead. With this afternoon’s road stage to be followed by the ascent of Glengesh Pass tomorrow, Sunday, there will be plenty of opportunity for the strong men to challenge Hambrook of the yellow jersey.
