Primoz Roglic crash Giro stage 15: The Jumbo Visma van looked vulnerable even before this fall going down the final climb into Como.

The first real cracks have appeared in the armour of Primoz Roglic at the Giro as he lost time to some of his general classification rivals on stage 15 today.

The Jumbo-Visma pre-race favourite, who demolished his rivals in the two time trials to date, suffered a mechanical and a crash.

That mechanical issue occurred with about 20km to go as the select group prepared to race hard up the final climb of the day.

And while Roglic got back into the group, race leader Richard Carapaz (Movistar) and Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain Merida) both attacked the group and got clear on the final climb.

They went over the top of that small 4km Civiglio ascent, crested with 9km remaining to the finish, just seconds ahead of Roglic.

However, the Jumbo-Visma man then crashed on a sweeping right hander going down the climb.

And by the finish Carapaz and Nibali had gained 40 seconds on Roglic.

The stage was won by Dario Cataldo (Astana) from Mattia Cattaneo (Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec).

They spent the whole stage – some 232km from Ivrea to Como – in a two-man breakaway that gained more than 15 minutes at one stage.

However, in the end they had just 11 seconds over Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott), who took 3rd from Hugh Carthy (EF Education First).

Yates and Carthy had attacked the select group and gone clear of it before Nibali and Carapaz went after them; all four finishing together 11 seconds down on the winner and runner-up.

More to come.
