Peter Hawkins took another impressive result in the UK today, finishing sixth on stage two of the Tour of the Reservoir to take second place overall in the two-day race.

Hawkins’ Madison Genesis squad took the top two spots overall in the first round of the British Cycling Elite Road Racing Series, with stage one winner Alex Peters finishing one place ahead of Hawkins for fifth to take overall victory.

“Today went perfectly for us,” said Hawkins afterwards.

“The team rode really strongly to keep the race under control and look after me and Alex.

“There were a lot of attacks on the last few laps from some of the guys who were up on GC but the team kept everything in check so all I had to do was stay at the front and follow a few dangerous guys.”

A move by Evan Oliphant of Team Raleigh and Joanthon Mould of NFTO, who will ride the An Post Rás next month, went clear in the final five kilometres. But as the duo were no danger to the overall standings, there was no need to panic for Hawkins and company.

“We didn’t react and just kept an eye on those who were a threat from the overall,” said the Belfast man who was riding his first race with his new changed having signed from the now defunct IG Sigma Sport over the winter.

“The race whittled down to only 15 guys or so at the end but Alex and I were still there, which meant that we were able to hold on to first and second overall.

“I really can’t say enough about how well the team rode. It was amazing to have the support of such a strong and committed group of guys. With the strength in depth that we have, I think that there we’re going to have a lot more wins this year.”

Having worn the yellow jersey at last year’s An Post Rás on stage 2 before crashing out the next day, Hawkins will return next month and feels he is almost back to the same type of form this year.

“Personally it was great to be back at the sharp end of things today,” he said.

“After a good start last year I never had anything like the same form after I broke my collarbone at the Rás. If this weekend is anything to go by I think I’m back to where I was, if not a little stronger.  Hopefully it’s the start of a big season.”
