Nicolas Roche has taken one of his best results of the season at the Tour of Turkey today. Sam Bennett relinquished his race lead as Alexey Lutsenko took the stage and Bennett’s blue jersey.

Sam Bennett may have lost his race lead at the Tour of Turkey today, but Nicolas Roche made sure Irish fans still had skin in the game in the finale of stage four.

The BMC Racing man was among the 15-man select group that pulled clear on the final climb up to the finish in Selcuk.

And while he was disappointed with finishing 5th on the stage, he is now up to 10th overall.

With two stages remaining Nicolas Roche is one of nine riders 10 seconds off the race lead.

The top three riders today gained time in the overall on the others in the lead group at the finish thanks to time bonuses

Alexey Lutsenko (Astana) took victory from Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates) and Eduard Prades (Euskadi-Murias).

There were time bonuses of 10, six and four seconds for the podium places at stage end. And those seconds are the only time separating any of the top 15 overall.

Roche said he was disappointed with his result. He got boxed in and missed out on a top three stage placing and time bonus.

The man who has already won two stages, Sam Bennett lost time today and gave up the race lead.

Lutsenko now leads by four seconds from Ulissi and has six seconds in hand on Prades.

Bennett placed 2nd on the opening stage on Tuesday and then went on to win on both Wednesday and Thursday.

That meant he collected time bonuses each day. He held the race lead this morning, with 26 seconds in hand on most of the field.

He said before today’s stage that he might be able to fight on the final climb and stay in contention for the overall.

Unfortunately that was not to be and in the end he lost over 11 minutes. He is now 97th overall.

More to come.
