Nicolas Roche takes WorldTour podium in China

Ireland’s Nicolas Roche has had a very long season, but he has managed to keep it going very impressively and claimed his best result of the year in his final race of the campaign.

Nicolas Roche takes WorldTour podium in China

Having begun his season nine months ago, Nicolas Roche has saved the best to last with a WorldTour podium in his final race of the year.

The BMC Racing man finished in 36th place in the main field on the final stage of the Tour of Guangxi in China today.

The 168km stage in Guilin was won by Fernando Gaviria; the QuickStep man winning four of the six stages on offer over the last week.

But while the Colombian was dominant in the sprints, the general classification was decided on stage 4.

It featured a finishing climb of 3km, which Nicolas Roche attacked hard from the base.

And while he was overhauled just before the finish by Tim Wellens (Lotto-Soudal) and Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) he took 3rd.

Wellens claimed victory and went into the race lead just ahead of Mollema and Roche. And that’s the way it stayed for the final two stages, both of which came down to bunch sprints.

It means Roche ended the WorldTour race in 3rd overall, his highest result of the season at that level.
