Video: Deadly Downey roars home for World Champs medal

Blasting into the big time: Mark Downey has just won a medal for Ireland at the World Track Championships in Poland.


Having won medals at the junior and U23 European Championships, won World Cup gold and taken 4th at the Commonwealth Games; Irish cyclist Mark Downey has just made a huge career breakthrough.

Competing at the elite World Track Championships in Poland, he’s taken a bronze medal in the points race.

Downey rode at attacking race; getting clear of his rivals and gaining two laps during the contest.

Those gains, along with points he took in some of the sprints, ensured he won the bronze medal.

The gold medal was won by Jan Willem van Schip of the Netherlands from Sebastian Mora Vedri of Spain and Ireland’s Mark Downey.

The new world champion’s name will be familiar as he won stage 2 of Rás Tailteann into Newport in 2017.

He now riders on the road for the Roompot-Charles ProContinental team.

And today’s silver medal winner was world champion in the scratch race three years ago.

He is also a road pro, competing this year for the Caja Rural-Seguros RGA ProContinental outfit.

In 2014 he took junior points race silver at the European Track Championships. He followed that up with his U23 silver at the Euros in 2016.

Furthermore he also won a gold medal in the points race at the World Cup in Apeldoorn, Holland, in November 2016.

He then claimed another points race gold and a Madison silver medal followed at the World Cup in Cali, Colombia, in February, 2017.

Mark Downey then went on to win his third gold medal in as many World Cups.

That came in Los Angeles in February, 2017, when he claimed gold in the Madison with partner Felix English.

And in July, 2017, at the Europeans he took bronze in the U23 points race in Anadia, Portugal.

He is also an excellent road rider; with Team Wiggins last year, EvoPro Racing this and with Ireland since his youth days.

In 2017 he scored a top 10 in the U23 road race at the World Championships and was 2nd on a Tour de l’Avenir stage last year.
