Plying his trade in Belgium with ASFRA Racing this year, March Heaney was best of the Irish in the ZLM Tour yesterday.

A six-man Irish selection went into the race in the hunt of precious points towards World Road Championships qualification.

After Matt Teggart’s 11th place at the U23 Tour of Flanders last weekend hopes were high of a top result.

And while that did not play out; Heaney, Jake Gray and Darnell Moore were in the large front group going for victory.

Italian Matteo Moschetti proved fastest in the sprint from the 64-strong group. He was taking his seventh win of the season in a UCI-ranked race.

He beat Sasha Weemaes of Belgium into 2nd place. Max Kanter, the U23 German road race champion, rounded out the podium.

Darnell Moore finished in 65th place, relinquishing just 11 seconds as gaps opened in the peloton in the sprint.

Dillon Corkery was in 101st place; the first-year U23 rider surviving well in his debut at this level. He was in a group 2:14 down.

Ryan Reilly and Michael O’Loughlin were non-finishers on the day; their rides impacted by crashes that littered the race.

A breakaway of three would ride clear for much of the race. However, they were brought back on the finishing circuits, paving the way for a sprint.

While Heaney put in a very solid shift he may have done better but for a mishap around 100km into the 178km race.

He got caught behind a crash and jammed his chain. While he chased and got back into the group he burnt a lot of matches regaining his place.

As the finish approached he also missed a split and was forced in a late chase.

Though he got back in again, it undermined his finishing effort. He would have perhaps come away with more from the race with better positioning.

However, crashes ruined his rides in this race, and Gent-Wevelgem, last year and he was forced to pull out of both.

Having finished in the front group yesterday he can be happy with progress in the bank this time around.

Elsewhere, Matt Teggart (Team Wiggins) and Alexis Roche (Cotes d’Amor) rode U23 Liège-Bastogne-Liège in Belgium yesterday.

The race was won by João Almeida (Hagens Berman Axeon). He finished 15 seconds ahead of two chasers. Another fourteen riders were 27 seconds down on the winner.

Teggart put in a solid ride; placing 30th. He finished in a group 11 seconds behind the 14 riders sprinting for fourth. Roche was a non-finisher.
