Maeve Gallagher is the new Irish junior women’s road race champion after deposing Lara Gillespie in Derry City today.

The Castlebar Cycling Club rider was second to Gillespie last year in Sligo when both pulled clear in a two-rider move and Gillespie (Orwell Wheelers) won the sprint.

This time around in the Foyle CC promotion the same duo went clear of the rest of the field, but Gallagher put another game plan in place.

On the hilly course that was suited to her better than European track champion Gillespie, Maeve Gallagher attacked her rival and rode away from her.

From that point, once she was clear she showed bravery and decisiveness in putting her head down and hitting out for home.

And thankfully the Mayo teenager – and international triathlete and cyclist – had the legs to make it all the way.

Gillespie hung on for silver on the day and Caoimhe O’Brien of Lakeside Mullingar CC took the bronze medal.

More to come.
