Lara Gillespie is now the current hold of 11 Irish titles on road, track and cyclocross. And she should really have another two, but she’s not complaining.

Lara Gillespie now holds 11 Irish cycling titles at once

Top Irish juniors Lara Gillespie and Shane Higgins were the big winners at the Irish Junior Track Championships over the weekend.

Gillespie, who rides for Scott-Orwell, took four gold medals. And that brings to 11 the number of Irish cycling titles she currently holds.

Higgins, Sports Room Racing, took two championship gold medals on the Sundrive Road velodrome.

He came out on top in both the pursuit and the kilo; his power proving too much for the others to handle.

In the women’s racing, such was Gillespie’s dominance that she won all four golds on offer. They were in the sprint, pursuit, 500 metre TT and scratch race.

Orla Harrison of TC Racing was 2nd to Gillespie in two of the title races; the sprint and pursuit. And Clodagh Gallagher (AAA) took the bronze medals in both of those races

In the scratch race Maeve Gallagher took the silver, with Hannah Tilly of Arcane taking bronze.

And in the 500m TT Clodagh Gallagher added a silver medal to her two bronzes. Harrison would round out the podium in that race.

Gillespie won the elite cyclocross title earlier this year and her tally for 2018 is now five Irish titles.

But she also still holds six of the titles she won last year, including U16 road race, TT and criterium champion.

She also won three U16 track titles last year which she still holds; sprint, 500m and scratch race.

Gillespie would have two more titles to her name but for the fact junior and U23 women’s cyclocross titles were not awarded.

In the men’s races at the weekend, Adam Ward (Powerhouse Sport) won the scratch race from Declan Maloney and Higgins, both of Sports Room Racing.

Higgins went one better in the pursuit, winning it from Aaron Wade (Lakeside Wheelers) and Mark Smith (Sports Room Racing).

In the sprint; this time the gold medal went to Wade. He won from David O’Sullivan (Sports Room Racing) and Ward.

And in the kilo Higgins was on top again, with Wade taking another silver and O’Sullivan collecting bronze.
