Irish teenager Lara Gillespie has taken a silver medal at the European Youth Olympic Festival.

The 16-year-old was in action in the 10km TT in Gyor, Hungary, and was beaten only by one of the Swiss riders.

Gillespie, a member of Scott-Orwell but riding on the national team this week, clocked a time of 15:20.

She was just three seconds off the winning time of Ronja Blochlinger. Team GB’s Elynor Backstedt completed the podium a further 3 seconds down.

It was a fantastic ride by Gillespie who has announced her talent by travelling to a very competitive international event and been successful.

There were 70 starters in the field on what was a tough day for testing. The riders were hit with crosswinds and cross-headwinds after a tailwind start.

“It was easy at the start, but when I turned the corner the wind hit so I pushed on,” said a delighted Gillespie.

“In the last few kilometres I wobbled from side to side,” she added of a ride during which she caught the rider off one minute before her.

“I knew I was going well because I passed the Hungarian but didn’t know I was going that well.

“My mother and sister were standing watching at the first roundabout and were cheering me on. They were surprised and happy to see me get the medal.

“This has been such a great experience; the team vibe is very good.”

Also competing today were Maeve Gallagher, who finished 24th and Caoimhe O’Brien, who came in 49th.

Cahir Doyle was the fastest of the Irish boys over their 10km TT, finishing 19th. The Irish team will be in action in their road races on Thursday.

Next up for the Irish Team is the Road Race on Thursday 27th July.
