American rider Magnus Sheffield of the prolific Hot Tubes team has taken the opening stage of the Junior Tour of Ireland.

The American national cyclocross champion, who also competes in downhill skiing, was best in the 6.4km TT into Drumquin.

Three Irish juniors made it into the top 20, suggesting this is a field with very strong international talent.

Best of the Irish was Mark Smith of Cycling Leinster in 8th place. Next of the home riders was Michael McGlynn of Cycling Ulster in 10th. And Cathir Doyle of the Irish national team was 13th.

Sheffield, from New York, beat fellow American, and junior US  TT chanpion, Matthew Riccitello (Lux SideShow) into 2nd place by 5.37 seconds.

Rounding out the podium on the night was Rickardo Broxham of South Africa, the national road race champion.

Ben Wright, of the US Lux Sideshow team, was 4th at 8.49 seconds. He is the former US youth hill climb champion and is a reign US junior champion in the TTT.

His team mate Andrew Vollmer was 5th, at 17.63 seconds. He won the Californian state road race junior title last year when he was also 2nd in the US individual TT championships.

In 6th place on the night was Matthew Oliveira from Bermuda and riding for Hot Tubes. He was 21.87 seconds down.

He’s the reigning Commonwealth Youth Games TT champion and took silver in the road race at those Games last July.

Ireland’s Smith was next; at 26.37. He has been riding very well this year; winning the Cycleways Cup, the recent Eddie Tobin Memorial and the Moynalty GP just last weekend.

Then followed eight-time US champion and youth and junior level Luke Lamperti.  The Team Swift rider was 26.46 down.

And rounding out the top 10 was Michael McGlynn; the Omagh Wheelers teenager who has been riding very well this year.

Part of the Cycling Ulster selection this week, he was 29.61 seconds down on the stage winner.
