Shay Donley wins Junior Tour of Ireland stage 2

After the US  riders had dominated the opening TT, Shay Donley has flown the Irish flag in winning stage 2 at the Junior Tour of Ireland.

The NRPT-Chill Insurance man is riding for Team Ireland this week and won the bunch sprint today.

While Donley has taken a series of victories already this season, his win today is the biggest of his career.

Though he is a first year junior he has established him quickly as one of the best in the country.

And now he has shown he can do it against very talented international opposition. Today’s stage, some 94km into Kilkee, Co Clare, was a testing one.

It took the riders down the Shannon Estuary and onto the exposed roads of Loop Head. The riders then crested Kilkee Cliffs before descending to the finish in Kilkee.

Despite plenty of aggression during the day, including long solo moves by Donley’s team mate Cathir Doyle and Kevin McCambridge of Cycling Ulster, it regrouped for a bunch sprint.

Donley was first into, and first out of, the last corner with about 200 metres to go. And he sprinted in strongly up the finishing straight for an impressive victory.

Stage 1 winner, and US junior cyclocross champion, Magnus Sheffield (Hot Tubes) finished in the main field. That means he retains the yellow jersey.

The green jersey for the points classification goes to stage winner Shay Donley.

And having picked up climbers’ points through the stage, Cathir Doyle has the polka dot jersey.

The first year-junior classification lead is held by the overall leader. But as he is wearing yellow that white jersey passes to Luke Lamperti (Team Swift).

More to follow.
