David Montgomery has taken a timely victory just one week away from the National Cyclocross Championships race of 2019.

The former Irish champion in the cyclocross discipline, Montgomery was best today in the Omagh Wheelers promotion in Fintona.

And not only was it a boost from him to win just seven days away from the biggest fixture of the season, he also beat some real quality.

One of the men behind him was Darnell Moore of Caldwell Cycles, who won the Irish elite cyclocross crown 12 months ago.

And last year’s junior champion Thomas Creighton, now an U23 rider and riding with McConvey Cycles, rounded out what was a quality podium at the end of a muddy January fixture.

Given the level the top three have reached in the past, all will be among the favourites for a medal next weekend.

Montgomery took the elite men’s title back in 2015 and then went on to ride for Team3M with An Post-Chainreaction.

Next week’s championships will be held in the Fota House resort in Cork and are being promoted by De Ronde Van Cork.

More to follow on today’s racing.

Moore takes the runner-up spot today.

Creighton has enjoyed a really strong season; on his way to 3rd at the Omagh Wheelers event.
