Ben Walsh has blasted his way to stage victory and the first yellow jersey of the Junior Tour of Ireland.

The Team Ireland rider was too good for the international field in the 6.2km TT that got proceedings underway in Ennis, Co Clare, this evening.

And the good news for Ireland was that no fewer than four home riders were in the top 10.

Walsh led the way from American Gaelen Kilburn of the visiting Hot Tubes team; the winner’s time of 7:47 some 6 seconds faster than the runner up.

To top off his victory in the race against the clock on the Kildysert Road to Drumquin; Walsh set a new record for the stage.

In 3rd and 4th places came two of Walsh’s Team Ireland team mates; Aaron Doherty and Dillon Corkery.

Doherty was 12.55 off the pace of national TT champion Walsh, with Corkery 15.83 seconds off the winning time.

Also in the top 10 this evening was Breandan Flannagan in 10th place and conceding 24.65 seconds to the winner.

Flannagan is riding for Cycling Ulster and though a relative newcomer to racing he is a dark horse in the pack this week.

But the evening belonged to Walsh, taking a really impressive victory as he has done a number of times already this season.

The weekend before last he enjoyed a fine overall win in the Newry Three Day. There he won the opening stage from a winning breakaway that pulled well clear of the rest.

And on the remaining two stages Walsh rode strongly to close down the threatening moves and maintain his overall lead.

If that victory and tonight’s performance are a sign of things to come for the remainder of the Junior Tour, it will take a good man to keep him and Team Ireland out of the yellow jersey.

However, the race has always attracted strong teams from abroad who come to do battle; the aforementioned Hot Tubes squad to the fore in that regard in recent years.

As well as the foreign challenge, there is also no shortage of very strong domestic riders in the club and provincial teams in the field.

With a total of 113 riders in the race and five more road stages to come, the scene is set for a real feast of cycling.

The runner-up this evening, American Kilburn, leads the Clare County Council 1st year junior classification going into tomorrow’s stage 2.

It takes the riders on a 109km route around the scenic west coast of Co Clare, departing Clare County Council buildings in Ennis at 12 noon.
