One month out from the National Cyclocross Championships and Robin Seymour has sounded a timely warning of his condition with a ‘gun-to-tape’ win in the final round of the Fixx Supercross Cup in Greystones, Co Wicklow.

The Team Worc man had a thrilling battle with Paul O’Reilly of UCD-Fitzcycles.ie before eventually prevailing in the seven-lap contest held on a testing course in perfect conditions.

However, both departed the venue as winners as O’Reilly sealed overall victory in the series and has been polishing his form towards the nationals.

The race, which had a massive field of over 130 riders, got off to a blistering start with Seymour right towards the head of affairs.

O’Reilly was never far away either and he surged forward in an effort to trim the group down.

His acceleration had the desired impact as he broke away with Seymour and Niall Davis (Biking.ie), another of the real stand-out riders so far this season.

The trio were clear for three of the seven laps before Seymour took things up a notch, with Davis being distanced.

O’Reilly and Seymour then pressed on, scaling the brutal ‘wall’ on the Greystones course together until the eventual winner made his race-winning bid two laps out.

The Olympian and MTB Masters world champion dived down into the pits which had O’Reilly in trouble.

He chased heroically to get back on level terms but Seymour stepped on the afterburners and romped home.

O’Reilly came in around half a minute down with Davis taking third on the day.

The runner-up, however, did have the distinction of winning the series outright.

His overall win came courtesy of his combined score over the four rounds.

Seymour, despite winning three of the four rounds, had to be content with 2nd overall.

The women’s race today was won by Marlena Drozdziok (Scott-Eurocycles) with Breda Horan (Scott Orwell Wheelers) winning the series outright.
