David Montgomery, Lara Gillespie win at Delamont Park

The form man on the Ulster cyclocross scene so far this season, David Montgomery took it up a notch yesterday.

He was almost two minutes clear of the next man home, Graham Boyd, after less than 50 minutes of racing at Delamont Country Park.

The former national elite champion and international road and cyclocross rider was matched in the early exchanges by Darnell Moore.

The Irish national hill climb champion stayed with Montgomery on the opening two laps of five.

The flying duo distanced the others in the field. However, on the third lap Moore ran into trouble, with the mud jamming his front wheel. He lost a lot of time leaving Montgomery the clear leader.

And from there he simply never let up; whipping around the fourth lap between 40 and 50 seconds  faster than those closest to him.

And while he eased back a little on the final lap he still ran out the winner, from Graham Boyd of McConvey Cycles, by almost two minutes.

Barry Kellett of Dromara CC was 3rd another 18 seconds back. After his flying start Moore was 4th.

In the women’s race Lara Gillespie (Scott Orwell) was victorious.

The impressive teenager was almost over 40 seconds clear of Glendale VC’s Trudy Brown. And in 3rd place came Julie Rea of Phoenix CC.

The B race was won by Richard Gaffikin of promoting club Killinchy CC, with Dean Lockhart (Carn Wheelers) 2nd just 17 seconds back.

And rounding out the podium was Seamus McAuley (Velo Cafe Magasin) another 27 seconds down.
