Irish national cyclocross titles for classy Aiken and McCluskey

Posted on: January 8th, 2017

Roger Aiken has won back-to-back Irish cyclocross titles after storming to victory in the decider in Tollymore Forest Park in Co. Down this afternoon. The defending champion was in a class of his own as he claimed his fifth national crown.

Just like 12 months ago, Roger Aiken and Beth McCluskey stormed to impressive victories in the Irish national cyclocross championships in Tollymore Forest Park, Co. Down today, Sunday.

On a perfect afternoon for racing, Aiken blitzed the field to win the title for the fifth time in his career while McCluskey (Jadan-Weldtite) made it back-to-back wins also.

The latter had too much in the tank for last year’s bronze medallist Maria Larkin (Chicago) and Blarney Stone CC woman Fiona Meade who rode a superb race.

The irrepressible Aiken edged Glenn Kinning who himself put up a spirited fight and ended the day taking yet another medal for his collection.

The Kinning Cycles man had no answer for the Banbridge CC rider in the end, but can be very proud of a silver medal.

Christopher McGlinchey (Chain Reaction Cycles) took a brilliant bronze and that will book-end a very impressive season for him indeed.

Elsewhere, Robin Seymour claimed the Masters O40 crown, though Alan Bingham pushed him all the way, much like he did to Greg Swinand (AquaBlue) in the national road race championships last August.

Meanwhile, JB Murphy (Murphy Surveyors Kilcullen) took the junior men’s race with John Buller (Banbridge CC) and Craig McCarthy (Xmtb McConvey Cycles) rounding out the podium.

More coverage and full results to follow.
