Something you won’t see too often on the Irish racing scene; a car ferry sailing past as the action unfolds (Photo with thanks to David McVeigh of The Belgian Project)

There was some great racing at the weekend in Hazelbank Park, Newtownabbey, with the backdrop of Belfast Lough adding to the sense of occasion.

A unique feature of the fixture was a section of racing on the beach, with the A field having to contend with a trip down the steps and onto the sands.

They raced up the beach and then came up off the sand for the remaining part of the loop.

David McVeigh of the Belgian Project caught the action on the beach in these photographs and videos.

Beach racing is held quite regularly in Holland, so maybe the Kinnings Cyclocross Series being taken onto the sand will lead to somebody organising a race entirely on a beach in Ireland.

We certainly have plenty of long spectacular ones to choose from.
