Scotland has been awarded the inaugural World Cycling Championships that will bring together all codes of the sport.

The combined Worlds, where 13 disciplines across all forms of cycling will come together, will run in August and will take two weeks.

As well as all the road and track titles being decided at the same championships, they will also feature all the world title races in mountain biking, downhill, trials, indoor cycling, Gran Fondo and paracycling.

The combined cycling Worlds will be held for the first time in 2023 when they will be staged in Scotland.

After that, a combined Worlds will be held once every four years; in the year before the Olympic Games.

The UCI officially announced today that Scotland had been awarded the Worlds. It staged the European Championships last August and is now seen as a leading multisport destination.

It’s another boost for British cycling which currently holds all three Grand Tour titles and will stage the World Road Championships this year in Yorkshire.

Speaking at today’s announcement at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow, UCI president David Lappartient said he was delighted to announce “Glasgow and Scotland” would host the first combined Worlds in four years.

“Glasgow and Scotland have a great deal of experience in the organisation of major sporting events, notably multi-sports, such as the first edition of the European Sports Championships that it organised in 2018,” he said.

“I am convinced that the UCI Cycling World Championships will be a great success, and I look forward enormously to preparing them with our Scottish partners.

“The award of an event such as this represents a wonderful opportunity to encourage cycling as a form of daily mobility, ensuring a sustainable future for both urban and rural areas and their populations.

“Glasgow and Scotland share this vision and will leverage these Championships to encourage this on their territory.”
