With the eyes of the world on Corsica last month for the first visit ever of the Tour de France to the island, the organisers had a disaster on the opening road stage.

The team bus of the Australian Orica Green Edge team arrived late at the finish, not long before the flying peloton was due.

But rather than find its place in the car park and wait for the riders, the bus became stuck under the finishing gantry. A period of panic ensued in which the organisers tried unsuccessfully to move the coach as the riders sped ever closer.

Eventually, it was decided to move the finish line to the 3km to go point, before the bus was moved and the original finish was reinstated.

Not to be outdone by the biggest race in the world, the Ballinrobe Two Day in Co Mayo today, Sunday, had an Orica Green Edge moment when a bus got stuck under the inflatable banner across the finish line.

However, unlike the scenes in Corsica, there wasn’t much panic today in the west as the collision with the coach punctured the banner, completely deflating it.

Club officials, to their great credit, kept their cool and quickly ensured the situation was dealt with and the banner removed, thus ensuring the safety of the riders.
