Pictured on one of the many cycling trips he had taken during a lifetime of adventure, Eddie Crean has been killed in a cycling accident in Denver.
An Irish adventurer from Co Limerick and based in United States, Eddie Crean has lost his life in a cycling accident in Denver Colorado.
Known as ‘Fast Eddie’ to his friends, Crean’s love for the outdoors brought him on many adventures across the global as he embraced cycling, marathon running, rowing, riding motorcycles and climbing mountains.
He sustained injuries in a cycling accident in Denver on Monday night that proved to be fatal.
He was a member of the Shannon Rowing Club in his native Ireland and was also a member of the Limerick Boat Club Appreciation Society.
Perhaps his best known achievement was when he climbed Kilimanjaro in Africa in 2008.
Most recently, in June he trekked across parts of the US with his partner and on his Facebook page shared a picture with his followers in March cooking a barbeque in the snow and ice of freezing Girdwood in Alaska.
He had also travelled extensively to take in challenges such as running in marathons and competing in rowing regattas.
In September of last year he had participated in the Boston Sharkfest Swim, which takes participants across the stretch of water separating east Boston from west Boston.
In recent months he had posted a number of photos taken while cycling and trekking in Eldorado Canyon State Park, the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum and Shenandoah National Park.
Up to the time of his death he worked as a driver for the Gentle Giant moving company in Somerville, Massachusetts.
The company has paid tribute to its “beloved friend and colleague” with a selection of photos of the many events and challenges he had taken part in, often with his colleagues, down the years.
The tribute reads: "Missing and Remembering ‘Fast’ Eddie Crean: Friend, Giant, Legend. All of us at Gentle Giant are devastated by the unexpected and tragic passing of our beloved friend, colleague, and brother Eddie Crean. We'll miss you so much Fast Eddie.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced though it is expected Crean’s remains will be brought to his native Limerick for burial.
