The event is over 2,000km in length, with 17 stages over the next 17 days covering the Wild Atlantic Way, south to north. The riders rolled out of Kinsale under blue skies this morning. And people can still sign up for one or more of the stages to come.

Run over a spectacular route up the west coast of Ireland, the Wild Atlantic Way Cycle Sportif has just gotten underway.

The first leg of the inaugural edition rolled out of Kinsale, Co Cork, this morning.

The format is simple, with the course up the Wild Atlantic Way from Cork to Donegal broken down into 17 stages.

Each day of cycling ranges from 86km to 162km in length. The 17 stages combined totals 2,058km and run from September 13th to 29th.



And those cyclists taking part can sign up for any number of stages – from one single day’s cycling to all 17 stages.

While the event is now underway, it is not too late to sign up and ride one or more stages at some point over the next 17 days.

For those who miss it this time around, the event will be held twice ever year. It will take place in the spring and again in autumn.

The new Wild Atlantic Way Cycle Sportif is run by Ride Wild and is backed by Fáilte Ireland; both hoping the event will grow in popularity with cyclists from Ireland those from abroad.

Fáilte Ireland chief Paul Kelly said he was delighted to see the event get underway today. And he believed for those who got to experience the Wild Atlantic Way by bike, an incredible experience awaited.

“Leisure cyclists will be immersed in a range of local communities over the next 17 days, with some 255 towns and villages along the route, and further incentivised by the support we are offering with logistics and events planned along the route,” he said.

“We believe that this year’s sportif will build the Wild Atlantic Way’s reputation as an attractive cycling destination. The event will take place biannually from 2018 in April and September.”

Tour Director at Ride Wild, Michael O’Boyle said the event would appeal to those who a passion for cycling and spectacular scenery.

“Cyclists received a warm welcome from the local communities as they enjoyed a unique cycling experience on the coastline,” he said of the start out of Kinsale this morning.

“We’re confident that this multi stage Sportif will attract a lot of interest this year, further building in 2018 and beyond.

“We have had great feedback from the cycling community along the route, and people have the chance to register for each stage up to the day before.”

Organisers Ride Wild are providing all of the necessary logistical support for participating cyclists. Entry to the multi-day events will include accommodation, meals and official cycling kit.

The kit includes a cycling jersey and shower jacket.

Also provided to participating cyclists is a kit laundry service and bag transfers as well as paramedic and mechanical support. The costs for these services will be included in cyclists’ registration fee.

A single day entry costs €45. Multi day stages including overnight stay costs €90. The support services are included in the prices.
