Dan Martin climbed to a fantastic victory in the Algarve yesterday and he’s also in the race leader’s yellow jersey going into Friday’s TT stage
At the end of the 189.3km stage from Lagoa to Alto da Fóia yesterday, Dan Martin was punching the air in victory, being hugged by his wife just after crossing the line and then resplendent in yellow on the podium.
The Irish QuickStep rider had danced up the final climb to the summit finish if stage 2 at the Volta Ao Algarve for his first win of the season.
He goes into today’s 18km flat TT stage as the race leader and while that event won’t suit him, he says he has worked on his TT position, is feeling great and will give it his very best.
The test today may well suit another Irishman in the race, Ryan Mullen (Cannondale-Drapac). He’s a specialist tester and the flat course coupled with the distance should really suit young Mullen.
Philip Deignan (Team Sky) is also riding. He finished in a group with Mullen towards the back end of the field yesterday.
