Video: Trouble in Astana vented live on TV after Aru lost yellow

Trouble in Astana between Valgren and Aru

Michael Valgren of Astana did not exactly look or sound devastated when his team leader Fabio Aru lost the yellow jersey yesterday.

Aru had a disaster on the final ramp to the finish.

He was far too far back in the peloton when it started. And when time splits appeared, Aru was on the wrong side of several of them.

Valgren was asked on US TV why Aru was not further up the field in the final. He told the interviewer: “Ask him”.

He said Aru was on his wheel but didn’t stay there and was non-communicative. There was little he could do for Aru in those circumstances, he said.

Valgren then asked the interview: “Did we lose the (yellow) jersey or what?”

And when he was told Froome now had it, he said: “Ah, good,” with a broad grin.

He went onto Twitter later to try and smooth things over, but the damage was done.

In the end Aru would lose 25 seconds to stage winner Michael Matthews (Team Sunweb).

More significantly he would give away 24 seconds to the general classification trio of Chris Froome (Team Sky), Dan Martin (QuickStep) and Rigoberto Uran (Cannondale-Drapac).

They were 6th, 7th and 8th on the stage while was back in 30th.

It meant Froome took the race lead again. And rather than trailing Aru by six seconds yesterday morning, he had 18 seconds in hand on him at the finish.

Valgren explained later he meant to give the impression that he did not think losing yellow was a devastating blow to the team and Aru.
