Anyone unsure how much concussion can impact bike riders need only look at this clip.

A much discussed issue in sports such as rugby, there has perhaps not been huge debate about concussion in cycling.

Very often when riders come down hard they simply get back on their bikes and carry on.

But he clip below of Toms Skujins (Cannondale-Drapac) crashing at the Tour of California should be all the evidence the sport needs that concussion needs to be prioritised.

The Latvian crashed descending on stage 2 yesterday. And not only was he badly injured, but he staggered around the road clearly very dazed.

He almost walked into the path of several oncoming riders to retrieve something in the road.

And despite the fact he was extremely dazed, he got back on his bike and continued towards the finish until his team managed to find him and got him off his bike before he reached the stage end.

He was taken to hospital after the race where a fractured collarbone and concussion were diagnosed.
