International road rider Ronan McLaughlin has won the epic 555km Donegal Atlantic Way Ultra Race at the weekend.

Riding in the colours of Foyle CC the former An Post-Chainreaction man completed the course in 19hrs 19mins 40secs.

While he won it well, the head of the leader board was perhaps tighter than one would think after such a long event.

Despite the riders taking in some of the toughest climbs Co Donegal has to offer, just 20 minutes separated winner McLaughlin from Aidan Callaghan who took 2nd place.

Both men have competed at the highest level in their specialist sport; McLaughlin at the World Road Cycling Championships and Callaghan of Letterkenny 24/7 at the World Triathlon Championships in 2012.

Callaghan also competed in the Ironman world championships at Kona, Hawaii, last year when he also won the Irish middle distance triathlon title.

Rounding out the podium in the Donegal Atlantic Way Ultra Race was Marty Lynch. He was just under 41 minutes down on Ronan McLaughlin.

Lynch is a noted endurance athlete and won 24-hour event The Race back in March.

It involves a 22km run, 15km kayak, 96km on the bike, 5km mountain run, 68km cycle and full marathon to finish in Glenveagh National Park, Donegal.

McLaughlin (30) has ridden at a very high domestic level in the Irish peloton since coming back to Ireland in 2013 after six seasons with An Post.

However, he has also taken on new challenges away from road racing, with the weekend’s event the latest of those.

A quick chat with the MC before Ronan McLaughlin got underway on Friday morning in Letterkenny.

The event began at 10am on Friday, with a cut-off point of 40 hours. That means the riders were required to finish by 2am on Sunday.

The race follows 555km of the Wild Atlantic Way around the county, with the ascents of both Mamore Gap and Glengesh Pass included.

It is open to solo riders and teams of two, four and eight riders, with competitors starting at 1 minute intervals and following a set route.

With race headquarters in Letterkenny, the riders raced for the Inishowen and anti –clockwise towards Malin Head and then over Mamore Gap.

The route then took the riders back to Letterkenny via Buncrana and then followed the Donegal Wild Atlantic Way south.

That section took the riders through Knockalla, Fanad Head, Atlantic Drive, Hornhead, Carrickfin, Glengesh Pass, Sliabh League, Barnesmore Gap and into the finish in Letterkenny.
