Top sports photographer Lorraine O’Sullivan has been gracing the domestic and international media with her photos for close on two decades.

A woman with a very keen eye for capturing big moments, she also has a knack of spotting the apparently small moments that often resonate most.

One stage 2 of Rás na mBan she was in the right place at the right time and captured the horror show that a crash in a bike race can often become.

And now on-board video footage of the same incident has emerged from within the bunch, below.

The pace is really on as the riders near the end of the race in wet conditions when they crash in two phases.

In the first fall, around 20 riders are involved, with most of those hitting the tarmac.

And just as they are getting onto their feet, the bike the camera is on whizzes through the wreckage.

As it comes out the other side of the spill, riders fall in a second wave. It is at that point that Irish champion Eve McCrystal of Team Ireland is among the fallers.

As O’Sullivan’s photos show, at one point McCrystal’s bike is left facing the wrong direction, having spun around as she tries to stop.

She remounts and gets back into the bunch. And though X-rays later reveal she has fractured her scaphoid, she continues in the race.

The clip was recorded, and has been posted by, French rider Noémie Abgrall of Team Breizh.
