Martyn Irvine is finally back in racing action. And as the clip below shows, he’s back in mint condition.

Martyn Irvine’s comeback to racing finally arrived today at Brabantse Pijl in Belgium.

The former world track champion faced a delay in getting his season underway because of UCI rules for returning riders.

Those coming back to the sport must be available for dope testing for six months before they can pin numbers on.

Judging by his appearance in the video below before today’s race he’s clearly been working hard in training.

He has had to busy himself preparing on his own as his new Aqua Blue Sport team mates raced away.

“I kinda knew there was something going on,” he said of the UCI six-month rule for those returning to competition.

“The team kinda came out of the woodwork real quickly, you know. I suppose I didn’t plan to be back at this level.

“If I was at the level I was the year before I wouldn’t have to be doing all this. So it kinda caught me out. It’s a good problem to have, I suppose.”

While Irish riders Conor Dunne and Matt Brammeier have both been in action for Aqua Blue Sport, Irvine has trained mostly alone.

The delayed start will hopefully mean he is much fresher towards the back end of the season.

And with Aqua Blue Sport having been invited to the Vuelta, which starts in August and continues into September, that may prove to be a big asset.
