Lars Boom obscene victory salute

Lars Boom was directing his anger at his own team management in LottoNL-Jumbo. He looked happier, above, when he later got his leader’s jersey.

Angry Lars Boom fined for obscene victory salute

Lars Boom has been fined 1,000 Swiss Francs for what looked like an angry and obscene victory salute at the BinckBank Tour.

To be fair to Boom, he put in a brilliant final surge to win yesterday’s stage. And he also took the race lead.

He was apparently fuming that his LottoNL-Jumbo team had told him he had little chance of making its Vuelta line-up.

But he got the best revenge possible with a fine victory at the end of a 164.9km stage in Sittard-Geleen.

And when saluting the crowd he went for a version of the ‘stick it where the sun don’t shine’ gesture.

Boom was clearly venting and delighted at the same time.

Even when he put his hands back on the bars after his salute he banged his front wheel a few times off the ground.

He had attacked from a really strong group in the last kilometre of stage 5. And once clear he hit the after burners spectacularly.

Lars Boom would finish three seconds ahead of other 15 riders he had been with. And he headed an all-star podium; Peter Sagan taking 2nd and Greg Van Avermaet in 3rd.

Boom took the leader’s jersey by two seconds from Sagan. Tom Dumoulin was third this morning at eight seconds.

Unfortunately for Boom, he lost the race lead on today’s penultimate stage.

Tim Wellens won from a two-man move with Dumoulin. And because they put 17 seconds into the next riders home, Dumoulin now leads from Wellens by four seconds.

Lars Boom finished down the field today. He has slipped to 7th overall at 1:46 with one stage remaining.
