Team Ineos group crash Tour de France stage 8: The Pinarello by the side of the road tells the story of a Team Ineos group crash towards the end of stage 8 today at the Tour de France.

Team Ineos suffered a group crash towards the end of stage 8 of the Tour de France today into Saint-Étienne.

The riders were grouped together in the peloton when at least two of them crashed on a descending sweeping right hander.

And those Team Ineos men that did not crash ran into the back of their team mates and were held up.

The result was a scramble among them to get Geraint Thomas going again, which was successful.

Within seconds the defending champion was being pushed off with some of his team mates for company to try and close the gap to what remained of the peloton.

Thomas got back in and finished in a group, with most of the main favourites, some 26 seconds down on solo winner Thomas de Gendt (Lott-Soudal).

Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) and Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-QuickStep) were 2nd and 3rd.

De Gendt was the sole survivor from the early breakaway and Pinot and Alaphilippe attacked late from what remained of the peloton.

However, while the two French riders got clear they could not catch the lone leader who took an excellent victory.

Pinot and Alaphilippe were six seconds down on the winner but, crucially, 20 seconds up on the group containing the main favourites.

That puts Alaphilippe back in the yellow jersey and it means Pinot, who is having a brilliant Tour so far, gained 20 seconds on all of his general classification rivals.

Dan Martin (UAE Team Emirates) finished in the group 26 seconds down on the winner, with the other favourites.

More to come.
