Sam Bennett has already secured his place in the Giro d’Italia history books. And now he’s a proper fans’ legend on the race.

The Carrick-on-Suir speedster likes a bit of craic and is also renowned for his bike control.

So when he was trailing off the back of the Giro today, he kept himself and everyone else entertained with a few wheelies.

He had the broom wagon breathing down his neck on the Zoncolan. But he popped a few wheelies there.

And he’d also lashed out a few earlier in the day when the road went up.

He has wheelies form, of course; having pulled a few on the climbs of the 2016 Tour de France.

Bennett (Bora-hansgrohe) has already had a fantastic Giro. He took his first ever Grand Tour win on stage 7 into Praia a Mare.

On that occasion he won a big bunch sprint, beating Elia Viviani (QuickStep) into 2nd place.

And then Bennett popped up again on stage 12 into Imola. This time the main field was tiny; the rain and late climbing seeing to that.

And when two escapees dangled off the front in the home straight, Bennett didn’t wait for the sprint. He attacked after them deep inside the final kilometre.

He swept passed the breakaway men. And he still had the legs to sprint off his attack. He absolutely demolished the finish for another win.

Considering the stages remaining, Bennett may get another chance on next Wednesday’s stage 17. And the final day, stage 21 next Sunday, may also suit him; though it is on an undulating circuit in Rome.
