Irish rider Ryan Mullen didn’t go as well as he had hoped on the final stage of Tirreno-Adriatico today.

The national road and TT champion was one of the pre-race favourites for the 10.05km flat TT in San Benedetto del Tronto.

The distance and terrain looked on paper like they were a perfect fit for Ryan Mullen.

However, after a very hard week in Italy he said he wasn’t in his best condition.

He would finish in 19th place, some 24 seconds down on stage winner Rohan Dennis (BMC Racing).

Jos Van Emden (LottoNL-Jumbo) was 2nd at four seconds. European champion Jonathan Castroviejo (Team Sky) was 3rd at eight seconds.

Race leader Michal Kwiatkowski (Team Sky) finished 12th on the stage at 20 seconds.

That was enough for him to wrap up the 2018 title. He claimed it by 24 seconds by Damiano Caruso (BMC).

Geraint Thomas (Team Sky), who had lost the overall lead due to a mechanical on Sunday, was 3rd overall at 32 seconds.

He finished one place behind his team mate and race leader today.
