Seven cyclists test positive for CERA in Vuelta Colombia

The UCI has said seven Colombian riders returned an adverse finding for third generation EPO Cera at the Vuelta a Colombia.

They were blood tested on August 1st and 2nd. A total of eight riders, all Colombians, returned positive test results at the race.

Juan Carlos Cadena Sastoque (Depormundo-m Bosa-ramguiflex) tested for steroid metabolites 19-noretiocholanolone. He gave a urine sample on August 11th.

All of the eight riders are provisionally suspended pending the test results from their B sample.

One of riders who tested positive for CERA was U23 national road champion Róbinson López (20)  of Loteria de Boyaca.

The others who returned an adverse result from CERA at the race back in August were:

  • Luis Alberto Largo Quintero (27) of Sogamoso-argos-cooservicios-idrs
  • Edward Fabian Diaz Cardenas (26) of EPM
  • Jonathan Felipe Paredes Hernandez (28) of Ebsa-Indeportes Boyaca)
  • Fabio Nelson Montenegro Forero (35) of Ebsa-Indeportes Boyaca
  • Luis Camargo Flechas of Supergiros
  • Oscar Soliz Vilca (32) of Movistar Amateur Team

The UCI suggested the riders were caught as part of a targeted testing programme on the 12-stage race from August 1st.

“These intelligence-led doping controls were planned and carried out by the Cycling Anti-Doping Foundation (CADF), the independent body mandated by the UCI, in charge of defining and implementing the anti-doping strategy in cycling,” the UCI said.

“The riders have the opportunity to request and attend the analysis of the B sample.

“In accordance with UCI Anti-Doping Rules, the riders have been provisionally suspended until the adjudication of the matter.

“At this stage of the procedure, the UCI will not comment any further on any of these cases.”
