Elia Viviani has won stage 4 of the Tour de France in a bunch sprint, completing his set of wins in all three Grand Tours.

He took the victory a day after his Deceuninck-QuickStep team mate Julian Alaphilippe won stage 3 and took yellow.

After the early three-man breakaway had been caught today, Viviani took the victory at the end of 213.5km from Reims to Nancy.

The Italian fastman, who was taking his first ever victory on the Tour, saw off Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates) and Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal).

Dan Martin (UAE Team Emirates) and Nicolas Roche (Team Sunweb) finished in the bunch, in 72nd and 93rd places respectively.

There was no change in the overall with Alaphilippe – who helped lead out Viviani today though he was in yellow – still top of the standings.

The talk of the stage was the crash suffered by Cofidis rider Pierre-Luc Perichon.

He didn’t seem to notice the riders in the bunch parting and warning of street furniture ahead and rode straight into it.

His team mate, who was recording on-board footage today, was also taken down and captured the incident on video, which is in the first clip below.

The good news is that Perichon suffered no serious injury. Indeed, he remounted and got back into the bunch.

And at the finish he rolled home at the back of the main field; clearly a man made from strong stuff.
