Photo finish of Des Hanlon main event; has to be closest finish ever
One of the biggest races in the country and it came down to this between three men lunging for victory in the elite men’s race.
Darragh O’Mahony (O’Leary Stone Kanturk) has just added huge value to the price of his already rising stock on the domestic scene by winning the Des Hanlon Memorial in Co Carlow.
One of the best riders in the country, he has foregone going abroad to race in order to go to college (for now at any rate).
And having already taken some really strong wins this season, he has now added the Des Hanlon Memorial to that list.
He just about nudged out Rory Patrick Townsend (Bike Channel Canyon) and Mark O’Callaghan of Aqua Blue at the end of a terrific race this afternoon.
The photo finish shot has been shared online by commissaire Gary McIlroy and must surely be the tightest finish in the race’s history.
O’Mahony said in a recent interview with stickybottle he was hopeful of being selected for the Irish U23 team.
And while some of his rivals for places on that team are abroad, he is making an excellent case for selection.
Eve McCrystal earlier won the women’s event for Garda CC, taking her biggest ever win on the road.
More to come from all the races today.
