Latest cyclist killed out training leaves behind wife, young child

The latest cyclist killed out cycling has been named as a young businessman with a wife and daughter. Donal O’Brien, above, was well known in them motor trade and in motor sport.

 

The cyclist killed in Co Cork yesterday has been named as married father of one Donal O’Brien.

Out cycling at the time to keep fit, Mr O’Brien owned his own car garage. He was a well known figure in Irish motor sport.

Aged 45-years, Mr O’Brien was cycling on the N22 Cork-Macroom road close to Ballincollig when he was struck by a car.

The collission, with a vehicle driven by a woman with two young children in her car, took place just before 12.30pm.

From Ovens, Co Cork, Mr O’Brien died at the scene of the collission near Exit 1 on the Ballincollig bypass.

Both Mr O’Brien and the vehicle he was in collission with were travelling west. He was the eight cyclist to die on the roads this year.

Colleagues left heartbroken

He was a married man and had a young daughter. His colleagues at Donal O’Brien Cars posted a short statement on social media this morning.

“It is with a very heavy heart that we share the news that our beloved company director, Donal O’Brien, was suddenly and tragically taken from us yesterday, 14th of May 2017,” it said.

“We are heartbroken. This business will remain closed until further notice.

“We want to express our sincere thanks to all our customers for their understanding at this very difficult time.”
