The new season is almost upon us and the first Irish junior squad selection of 2018 is in Spain this week for a training camp. A total of 11 riders were invited to the camp near Ali Cante. Irish junior cycling squad in Spain ahead of new season

With the new domestic road racing season now just a couple of weeks away, an Irish junior squad is training in Spain.

Eight riders are assembled this week to train under the eye of Martin O’Loughlin. Another three were invited but had prior commitments.

Those riders currently in camp are: Liam Curley, Aaron Doherty, Shay Donley, PJ Doogan, Cathir Doyle, Conor Gallagher, Conor Halvey and Mark Smith.

The three others invited but who had prior commitments are Breandán Flannagan, Adam Ward and Archie Ryan.

A number of U23 riders also missed their national camp last month; a common enough occurrence pre season.

The Irish junior squad will be based in Orihuela for the next week, making good use of the school midterm break.

Orihuela is close to the Sierra de Orihuela mountains in the province of Alicante, Spain.

Other juniors can be added to the squad and gain selection for races during the season.

However, the choice of the 11 riders invited this week offers a clear indication about the selectors plans; at least in the first part of the season.
